BOISE, Idaho — Fresno State has played some great teams during the Pat Hill era, including a couple No. 1s.

Nobody has treated the Bulldogs like the No. 3 Boise State Broncos did Friday night at Bronco Stadium.

The Broncos rolled to a 51-0 victory, holding the Bulldogs to fewer than 100 yards until the final drive and becoming the first team to shut them out since 1998.

The Broncos improved to 10-0 and set up a high-stakes showdown next Friday at No. 19 Nevada. The Broncos can claim at least a share of the WAC title and perhaps position themselves for a spot in the BCS National Championship Game.

"I hope it’s our best game because we’re trying to get better every week," senior defensive end Ryan Winterswyk said of the Fresno State win. "I hope next week is another best game. That’s always the way we want it to be." The game got off to a weird start for the Broncos’ usually flawless offense.

On the first play, quarterback Kellen Moore underthrew wide-open receiver Titus Young by about 10 yards. The Broncos got a pass-interference penalty on the play, but not the easy touchdown they could have had.

Later in the drive, Moore had another shot at a touchdown pass but defensive end Donahvaughn Pritchett jumped and tipped Moore’s pass at the line of scrimmage. Safety Phillip Thomas intercepted the pass at the Fresno State 10-yard line.

The Broncos’ next offensive play was even worse. The ball slipped out of Moore’s hand on an attempted pass and went backward. The officials blew the play dead as an incomplete pass, but Fresno State got the clear recovery and the replay booth overturned the call.

Fresno State took over on the Boise State 35-yard line. Three plays later, they punted from the 40. Nickel Winston Venable provided the key play with an 8-yard sack.

The Broncos’ offense responded with a 13-play, 78-yard drive. They didn’t face a third down until they got to the Bulldogs 2-yard line — and Moore was forced to throw the ball away because no one was open. Kyle Brotzman kicked a 20-yard field goal for a 3-0 lead with 53 seconds left in the first quarter.

The Broncos scored again on the next drive. Moore hit Young on a 45-yard fade route down the sideline and Austin Pettis made a 13-yard grab on third-and-9. Tailback Doug Martin capitalized with a 1-yard touchdown run for a 10-0 lead.

After a Fresno State three-and-out, sophomore Mitch Burroughs caught a punt at the Boise State 11-yard line and darted through traffic for 34 yards. Two plays later, Moore fired a 42-yard strike to Young for a touchdown. That made it 17-0 with 6:15 left in the first half.

Fresno State got some offense going on the next drive. Ryan Colburn hit A.J. Johnson for 21 yards on third-and-20. He added a 25-yard strike to Jamel Hamler.

But on second-and-10 at the Boise State 23, Colburn ran into trouble. He slipped a near sack by Venable and scrambled to his left, where defensive end Shea McClellin sacked him from behind and forced a fumble. Winterswyk recovered.

The Broncos weren’t able to score because of a dropped pass by Gabe Linehan on third-and-1. They punted with 1:35 left in the half and two timeouts.

The defense forced a three-and-out — and with help from a timeout, two incompletions and a bad punt the Broncos got the ball back at their own 45, 1 yard better than where they punted from. And they only lost 29 seconds on the exchange.
